Grandpa’s voice took on a calm and soothing tone as he concluded the story “And so the wise man who built his house on the rock welcomed his brothers, their families and pets to live with him and they all lived happily ever after.”
“Grandpa why didn’t the storm take away his house?”
“Because the rock was very strong.”
“Is that why the story says he’s wise?”
“Yes it is, he chose the right place to build his house.” Grandpa was getting tired.
“Grandpa does that mean the people on the telly weren’t wise?”
Grandpa stared mouth ajar.
Written for Friday fictioneers a writing challenge hosted by Rochelle. The picture was provided by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields herself and the task is to write a 100 words story inspired by it. And so it often is! The simple morality of our tales doesn’t always fit well in the real world

Indeed, it changes with each era.

When you think it’s all be said by the wise, the kids will show you the incongruities. Not everything fits as we’d like it.

Woooh! Loved it.
Wanted to write about the Sea of Galilee!
Your take inspires me to write my third blog on this!

Just read the first two and I love the way you described the scene. A third one would be interesting.

I sincerely doubt that.

You capture a child’s logic – out of the mouths of babes…
I read the story of the Walls of Jericho to my son and he said, Well that’s not very nice is it Mummy! Which could sum up some of the old testament.

Indeed from the mouths of babes.
The old testament does seem stuffy and rigid but it’s what makes the grace of the new testament all the more beautiful.
Thank you!

Ah, yes, the parable. Nicely done with the question at the end – I, too, thought, “Out of the mouths of babes …”
A small correction (I think). I believe you meant, “Grandpa stared (not starred), mouth ajar.”

Will make the correction straightaway.
Indeed out of their little mouths profound reflections come.

Like the rest of the commentors I picked up on the allusion to the words of Christ. Sometimes it’s best to update old stuff; it shows a reflection on the original material, an attempt at understanding, and an attempt to translate it into our setting, in a way we understand.

Indeed it does.
In my mind I imagine grandpa explaining that they were wise at the time of building the house, but as life continually changes we must accept that certain ‘rocks’ will be shaken but what we must never lose is that internal rock of ages.
Thank you so much for the insightful comment.

Sorry, I seem to be the only one who doesn’t get this.
Who are the people on the telly?
Are we talking about tsunami victims?

Well not necessarily, mostly refering to anyone whose house gets swept away by flooding.

As a grandparent or a parent, even though their questions might wear us out we know that they indicate we have stirred something in the child, and that’s a good thing.
