“Do you remember when we played on the beach and our mothers exchanged speculative glances?”
Laughing “And we were blissfully unaware that our mindless play was setting the cogs of an antique divide into motion.”
“It seems only like yesterday, those bygone days of our youth” her sigh entwined in the wind like grey threads of despair carried off to the distance shores of the ocean.
There it echoed with another who wailed for a beloved swallowed by the ageless womb of the oceans. Laying the flowers down, she left the beach.
Jumping to his feet, he extended his hand “Up with you my precious sea orchid, time to face the wombs that sprang us forth.”
Frowning comically at him “With an invitation like that, I rather put off telling them for fear of what their mouths shall spring forth this time around.”
“Oh come on, we’ve our lucky pebble found on this very beach where we first met. Surely that’s a good sign?”
Shrugging “I hope so.”
Linking fingers they left the beach.
I have Adele’s song “when we were young” playing in the back of my mind while I was writng this.
