For others a hoax, a sham at best,
It was a myth, creations of a feeble mind,
Life simply was, neither deity nor creed defined it.
For another a betrayal of faith, illusions of the unattainable.
It failed to protect, but demanded true allegiance
Life dredged along, deity and creed failed it.
For some a symbol of hope, a sign of love,
It was the last sacrifice, an unmerited gift.
Life mysteriously passed, deity and creed soothed it.
